There is something about it’s simplicity that really draws the audience in. It’s resemblance to custom calligraphy makes it an ideal font for portraying elegance and beauty. “Zapfino is a fantastic font for many different types of creative undertaking from advertising to wedding invitations”. Zapfino is included in Apple’s Mac OS X to demonstrate its advanced typographic features. The typeface was called Zapfino and was released in 1998.
Zapf created four alphabets and an assortment of ornaments, flourishes, and dingbats. Zapf presented the idea to the Linotype Company who was founded in 1886 and was the world’s leading manufacturer of book and newspaper typesetting equipment. Such a result could only be achieved using modern digital technology, and so Zapf and Siegel began work on the complicated software necessary.” Siegel hired a programmer, Gino Lee, to help work on the project. Zapf “had previously tried to create a calligraphic typeface for Stempel in 1948, but hot metal composition was too limiting on the freedom of swash characters. Zapf had been approached by David Siegel with the proposal to create a typeface with a large amount of glyph variations. It was based originally on a calligraphy alphabet that Zapf had penned in 1944. Zapfino was created by the typeface designer Hermann Zapf in 1998. It’s very appealing and portrays an essence of class and refined taste. It is a mixture of script and print with a touch of calligraphy. Something you would see in wedding stationary or a Christmas card. I thought this font was beautiful and elegant. It is interesting to see how type is used in different cultures and for this post I chose 3 random fonts that I found beautiful in some way and would like to discuss them.
